Mrs. Cartman's name
[edit]IMDb has Mrs. Cartman's name as "Liane" [1], while it's spelled both "Liane" [2] and "Lianne" [3] at South Park Studios' site. It's never spelled "Luanne", though; if there's a source for the latter, please post it. --Arteitle 05:42, Oct 10, 2004 (UTC)
Best Known?
[edit]Is she really best known for South Park? I seem to recall that she has a long history of voice work in a variety of old cartoons. Is this something worth researching and adding into here? --Xquester
I think she's best known for South Park. I realize her career was more than that, but South Park just sticks out to me. After all, the South Park characters, according to findagrave.com, are on her grave. Jbm867 05:48, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
who replaced her?
[edit]So who has replaced her in South Park? Is the voice difference obvious?--Sonjaaa 23:23, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Eliza Schneider replaced her.
Less Known but Notable
[edit]Fans of interactive computer games of the 1990s may recognize her work if they'd played the Palladium Interactive send up of X-Files, known as "X-Fools." Bergman performed the Gillian Anderson-like voice of Detective Dede Scudder, as well as other voices. She also did voices for titles such as Leisure Suit Larrys 6 & 7, Sierra's Gabriel Knight, she did all the female parts for Nine Worlds featuring Patrick Stewart, The Curse of Monkey Island, and many more. Besides being the official Snow White voice for Disney in 1989, Bergman could imitate a host of other familiar voices. She had an unique talent of replicating the voices of well known names like Marilyn Monroe, Cher, Catherine Deneuve, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Alanis Morrissette, Jewel, Annie Lennox, Helen Hunt, Holly Hunter, Alfre Woodard, Joan Cusack, Eartha Kitt, Melissa Gilbert, Elizabeth Taylor, and even a young Macaulay Culkin. She had a pheomenally versatile singing voice as well.
In Weird Al Yankovic's CD title Running With Scissors, Bergman was the voice of the "Gentile Chick" on the third track of the album, Pretty Fly For A Rabbi. Her voice over work was also featured in hundreds of commercials. Chances are you still hear her today, but don't know it. She also trained a many others in voice over workshops where she taught others how to do what she did. There's a lot more about her at (see [4]).
- Who did she voice in Leisure Suit Larry? Coolgamer (talk) 03:08, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
Marital Status
[edit]Marital status, should it say "deceased" or summat? JayKeaton 13:26, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Motives for suicide?
[edit]There is a clear lack of suggestions for motive behind suicide. Did she suffer from depression? Was there some traumatic event that triggered it? Or mayhaps, is a lack of evidence responsible?
- Agreed. Does anyone have more information on this? Jackryan 21:07, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- IMDb says she had depression, which she kept hidden from everybody else. Nqnpipnr 18:43, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
- Did she take psychotropic drugs for her depression? If so, were those drugs the cause of a deeper depression leading her to kill herself? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.3.37.68 (talk) 19:47, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Unique Gravemarker?
[edit]This sentence seems odd: Mary Kay Bergman was laid to rest under one of the most unique gravemarkers at... - What makes it unique? Why is it unique? how is it different from the other gravemarkers around and where does this unique claim come from? -Gohst (talk) 11:27, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
- Here is a picture of the grave marker: [5]. I don't see anything unique about it, so I removed the sentence. Paul Studier (talk) 05:50, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
Keeping it encyclopaedic
[edit]I'd keep an eye on that fact that this is an encyclopaedia article, not a piece designed for promoting, memorialising or celebrating Bergman. Most of the sources currently given do not look that solid. The main memorial site could be considered a fansite. Objective third party sources - biography, newspapers are preferable. Span (talk) 19:16, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Conflicting depression statements
[edit]There are conflicting statements within the article regarding Ms Bergman's depression.
In the lede section: "Bergman suffered from depression, which was caused by her mother having cancer, and job-related stress."
In the "Illness and death" section: "Bergman had been suffering from bipolar and generalized anxiety disorders, which she hid from her family, friends, and co-stars. Because her mother was diagnosed with cancer, Bergman's depression was mistaken as a reaction to her mother's illness along with job-related stress.[22] Andrade said that he found herbal mood medications that Bergman had hidden in their home.[23]"
To contemplate killing oneself requires a lot of inner pain and self-loathing. The "Illness and death" section sounds like it's much more likely and is sourced, to boot. I suggest reworking the lede to reflect the sourced information. Thank you, Wordreader (talk) 03:04, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
Post hoc ergo propter hoc in the lead
[edit]I changed a small section of the lead section. Just because she suffered from depression and committed suicide and suicide is linked to depression, doesn't mean that we can claim that her depression caused her to commit suicide, doubly so without a source. It is a clear case of post hoc ergo propter hoc to try to make the connection and short of someone who can go back in time, or possibly has access to her suicide notes, we won't know with the certainty needed to make the link. "Committed Suicide" vs "Took Own Life"
[edit]I've had two edits reverted in which I changed the phrase "committed suicide" to "took her own life". Now, I have my own opinions about the use of the phrase "committed suicide" (I believe it stigmatizes the victim) and if you have a different opinion, that's fine with me. But the fact that remains that "to take one's own life" is a widely-accepted phrase, not some politically-correct euphemism, and an editor should be able to use it. There's no reason to revert my edits. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Riverhugger (talk • contribs)
- The term "committed suicide" by no means "stigmatizes the victim"; it simply is just a straight forward indication one intentionally killed themself. It's also less wordy than "took her own life". SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 10:47, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Like I said, it's fine if you have a different opinion. But it sounds like the only reason you had to revert my edit was that it's more wordy, which barely seems like a valid reason. Why not leave it in place? Riverhugger (talk) 15:23, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Also - I do not expect you to agree with my opinion, as it's not really important to this discussion, but just FYI, this is where I derive my opinion from. It's rather widely-held. Long story short, "committed" implies a crime, and indeed suicide has historically been treated as a crime, thus stigmatizing those who kill themselves.
- That's an oversimplified take on "committed"; it doesn't necessarily involve crime (i.e. one can commit to a goal, commit time to something, or commit to a relationship). Using "took her own life" is beating around the bush. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 17:08, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Like I say, I understand if you don't agree, but why does that mean you're so against using a different wording? Because it uses a couple more words than the status quo? Riverhugger (talk) 17:33, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- More because what you inserted was trying to sugar-coat the matter. Wikipedia isn't supposed to be a place for doing that with unpleasant matters. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 19:14, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
- Perhaps "killed herself" would be a better compromise as suggested by Binksternet? I'd be fine with that.
- I'd be fine with that. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 01:19, 8 August 2019 (UTC)
- We should not be saying "committed suicide" in any situation that is outside of the discussion of suicide as a crime. If we are being neutral about people who kill themselves, we say they took their own life or killed themselves. Suicide is a crime that can be committed, which is an extra stigma laid upon the action. Binksternet (talk) 18:02, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
mkbmemorial site
[edit]Hello, I am unclear why this memorial site used throughout the article: http://www.mkbmemorial.com/ appears to be a memorial site dedicated to the basketball player kobe bryant. Paticularly, as it is being used to back up various claims about mary kay bergman's life.--Markensoft (talk) 14:21, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
- The domain used to be a Mary Kay Bergman memorial site, but it appears the domain expired a while ago and was recently made into a Kobe Bryant memorial site. But I agree they should either have the Web Archive versions sourced or find different sources. Elhenzo (talk) 09:27, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
MUGEN credit
[edit]I have removed the credit for game engine M.U.G.E.N.. As far as I can tell, there was no original voice acting in any official release, though fans may have scraped her voice from existing sources.SaidSwans (talk) 13:33, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
Death
[edit]Why does it say "pronounced dead in the hospital"? She shot herself at home and was pronounced dead right before Dino and John returned. --2601:204:C500:3B8:A18D:3C80:9E87:D63B (talk) 16:37, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
Jimmy Neutron credit
[edit]How do we know she was an additional voice in the Jimmy Neutron movie? There is nowhere in the credits that says anything about additional voices, nor is there a reference. Also, production started after her passing from what I hear. --2601:204:C500:3B8:DDCF:7E2F:8FBB:A315 (talk) 21:39, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
- I've removed that listing as a dubious inclusion. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 22:07, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Disneyland 45th Radio Program Source?
[edit]There's no source for the claim that she was on a Disneyland radio show the morning before her death. Gonna research this claim later but I feel this was notable for a topic discussion. MantleM (talk) 01:01, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Her parents performed as a singing duo at lounges and clubs in Reno and Las Vegas and in Los Angeles. They settled in Los Angeles after her mother became pregnant.[1] Characterizing her mother's previous work inking and painting cels for Fleischer, Bergman said it was a mechanical task, but it piqued her mother's interest in animation that was shared with Bergman years later by watching Saturday morning cartoon series with her. Among Bergman's favorite series were Jonny Quest, The Flintstones, and Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, which she considered a "precursor to The Simpsons."[1]

Times don’t add up
[edit]It says she was last “seen” alive at 9pm from a phone call (?) and that she was found by her husband an hour and 20 minutes later, but declared dead at the hospital at 10:18pm, so unless the ambulance was a DeLorean…
Also, just out of curiosity, was there any speculation that it was anything other than a suicide? Should there have been? 😬 76.174.245.26 (talk) 07:27, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
Conversion to Roman Catholicism
[edit]Why has this been removed? Urgeback (talk) 10:28, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
I can't find a reliable source that she converted. Also I'm curious if both of her parents were actually Jewish since her mother's surname was McGowan. BenStein69 (talk) 16:10, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
One cannot determine solely based on last name whether someone is or isn't Jewish, but unless this feels adequate to use or a better thing comes along, I'm hesitant to reinstate a conversion. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 22:31, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Child Actress?
[edit]Bergman (Born June 5, 1961) was 16 when her debut, Return Engagement at IMDb was filmed. 108.45.88.77 (talk) 00:02, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
- That instead makes her a teenage actress; calling Bergman a "child actress" would imply she started acting before the age of 13. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 00:06, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
There isn't a categories called "American teenage actresses," and a child actress is really who started live acting before 18. See List of American former child actors
Mary Kay Bergman photos and reassessment
[edit]Can you please help me find photos of Bergman that I can use under Fair use and under any of the Creative Commons license that can make the readers understand the context better, or does it look okay without the photos that I uploaded? I would love this article to be reassessed as a B grade and that it can be in Good article and Featured article status at some point soon. I'm pretty much in mental breakdown right now.
Some editors I would like to help with.
- Aubreeprincess (talk) 08:53, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Any free images are preferable over fair-use, though I'm not sure how many of the former type exist for Bergman. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 11:57, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm not exactly sure how many there are either. There won't be any images until a free one is found since only one non-free photo is allowed for a deceased person. Also, I actually did not know that until lately, probably because I'm new to editing articles on people, and I'm used to adding photos for fair-use without a problem. All of my other files that were in fair use were fine without a problem. Aubreeprincess (talk) 01:08, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- That may have been because the other articles didn't previously have any non-free photos, and when the third criterion listed at WP:Non-free content criteria is Minimal usage, that means one (in this case an infobox headshot) is all we need here. If you do find a free picture of her, then that would be used instead those are always preferred to non-free uploads. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 01:18, 13 August 2024 (UTC)

Mother’s name misspelled in article.
[edit]I feels like it is spelled wrong, and is McGowan, not McGowen. Her mother’s name is often said as "Patricia McGowan Paris" in sources I could find, including historical sources for her mother, which lists her mother’s name as "Patricia McGowan", "Patricia Paris" or "Marilyn Enoch". I will find any source to change it to the correct spelling. TheGreatestLuvofAll (talk) 00:57, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
- Not sure which sources you're talking about, but the one used gives McGowen. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 01:47, 20 November 2024 (UTC)
